VIII — SIGNIFICANCE

VIII — WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE GREAT SENDING IN JOHN 17:18 AND JOHN 20:21-23 IN LIGHT OF THE ENTIRE GOSPEL OF JOHN?

(Participants are encouraged to read the full Gospel of John and then work together to answer these Catechism questions)

  • How does the use of “sent,” “send,” and “sending” (ἀποστέλλω or apŏstĕllō) in John 17 (seven times) and 20:21 and the whole Gospel of John (read and mark the countless times) shed light on Christ-Apostolic authority?

  • How does the use of “world” (κόσμος or cosmos) in John 17 alone (eighteen times) and the whole Gospel of John (read and mark the countless times) shed light on Christ- Apostolic authority?

  • How does the use of “that,” and “so that” (ἵνα, hina—in order that, denoting the [mission] purpose or the result) in John 17 (eighteen times) and the whole Gospel of John (114 times) shed light on the purpose of Christ-Apostolic authority? (Note: the use of “that” and “so that” appears a total of 570 times throughout the New Testament.)

  • How does the use of “as,” and “just as” (καθώςor kathōs)in John 17 and the whole Gospel of John explain Christ- Apostolic authority? (Hint: see John 13:14-16,34; 15:4,9- 13; and Ephesians 4:32; 5:1.)
